Case Study of Cast Stone Composite Pipe in Tailing Conveyance at Zijin Mining’s Gold-Copper Mine

Zijin Mining’s newly constructed dry‑discharge pipeline for its gold–copper mine utilizes 1,500‑mm cast‑stone composite pipes. The project was officially commissioned in July 2023, undertaking the transportation of copper‑mine tailings with a daily throughput capacity of up to 60,000 tonnes. To date, it has been operating continuously and stably, with no abnormalities throughout the entire process and no occurrences of wear, leakage, or other issues.

The project handles alum‑stone‑type high‑sulfur flotation tailings under harsh operating conditions: the tailings have a d₅₀ of 0.027 mm, with 90% passing a 200‑mesh screen; their true density is 2.86 t/m³; the total sulfur content is approximately 9%; the slurry concentration during transport is 43%; the slurry specific gravity is 1.49; and the pH is around 3.2. These tailings are ultrafine, highly corrosive slimes.

Under the demanding operating conditions of high-sulfur, highly corrosive, ultra-fine muddy slurries, cast‑stone composite pipes maintain stable performance over long service lives, fully demonstrating their exceptional wear and corrosion resistance as well as structural stability. With strong practicality and excellent adaptability to complex, harsh slurry environments, they provide a reliable piping solution for large‑scale dry‑discharge tailings transport systems in copper mines.
