Case Study: Application of Cast Stone Composite Pipes for Tailings Transportation at the Yongping Copper Mine of Jiangxi Copper Company

At the Yan Cang Tailings Pond of the Yongping Copper Mine, Jiangxi Copper Company, three cast‑stone composite pipelines with a total length of 10,000 meters were installed. Commissioned in 1988, the system serves to convey copper‑mine tailings, processing 10,000 tonnes of raw ore per day. To date, it has operated steadily without any anomalies, serving as a model for long‑term, reliable material transport in China.

The project discharges tailings that, after hydrocyclone classification, consist of fine silicate‑skarn‑type copper tailings with a d₅₀ of 0.032 mm, 72% passing 200 mesh, a true density of 2.94 t/m³, and approximately 2.3% sulfur content. The slurry is conveyed at a concentration of 27%, with a slurry specific gravity of 1.33, exhibiting both strong abrasive wear and mild acidic corrosion characteristics. Cast stone composite pipes are ideally suited for long‑distance dilute‑slurry transport, offering outstanding wear and corrosion resistance to withstand continuous erosion and chemical attack. With a structurally stable design and excellent sealing performance, these pipes have operated for 38 years without leakage or wear‑related failures. Thanks to their exceptionally long service life and extremely low maintenance costs, cast stone composite pipes have become the benchmark for dilute‑slurry conveyance in China.

This project fully demonstrates the exceptional practicality and applicability of cast‑stone composite pipes, providing a replicable, mature solution for the long‑distance, low‑concentration, mildly corrosive tailings transport in domestic copper mines.
