Case Study on the Application of Cast Stone Composite Pipes for Tailings Transportation at Gushan Mine, Maanshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd.

The tailings‑transport system at the Gushan Mine of Maanshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. employs two cast‑stone composite pipelines to convey iron‑ore tailings, with a total pipeline length of 15,000 meters. Commissioned in October 2018, the project processes 40,000 tons of raw ore per day and has been operating steadily ever since, without any abnormalities. It serves as a quintessential case study of long‑distance transport of ultra‑fine, clayey oxidized iron ores in the East China region.

The project’s tailings are sedimentary oxidized hematite tailings, with a d₅₀ of 0.023 mm, 87% passing 200 mesh, a bulk density of 2.72 t/m³, and extremely low sulfur content. The slurry is weakly alkaline and contains substantial kaolinite and iron oxide colloids, resulting in high yield stress and elevated pumping resistance. Operating conditions are complex, placing stringent demands on the wear resistance of pipeline materials. Cast‑stone composite pipes, owing to their outstanding wear resistance and structural stability, are ideally suited for conveying ultrafine slurries with high yield stress and significant pumping resistance. During prolonged continuous operation, these pipes exhibit no wear, no leakage, and no maintenance‑related failures, thereby fully demonstrating their reliability.

Cast stone composite pipes, with their stable performance and exceptionally long service life, have demonstrated strong practicality and applicability in the long-distance conveyance of iron ore tailings, offering a mature and reliable solution for similar tailings‑transport projects in the East China region.
