Case Study: Application of Cast Stone Composite Pipes for Tailing Transport at the Zijinshan Gold-Copper Mine in Shanghang, Fujian Province
At the Dafengbei tailings pond of Copper Plant No. 2 and Copper Plant No. 3 at the Zijinshan Gold–Copper Mine in Shanghang, Fujian, cast‑stone composite pipes were used throughout the entire tailings‑transport pipeline system, with a total of 7,500 meters installed. The project was officially commissioned in July 2020, undertaking the transport of copper‑mine tailings at a daily throughput of 50,000 tons. To date, it has been operating continuously and stably without any abnormalities—no wear, no leaks, and no maintenance‑related failures.
This project handles flotation tailings of the alunite type with high sulfur content, characterized by a d₅₀ particle size of 0.027 mm, a −200 mesh fraction of 90%, a true density of 2.86 t/m³, and a total sulfur content of approximately 9%. The slurry is conveyed at a concentration of 43%, with a slurry specific gravity of 1.49 and a pH of about 3.2. These tailings are ultrafine, highly corrosive, and present a dual challenge: high yield stress combined with severe acid corrosion. Cast‑stone composite pipes are specially tailored to meet the unique properties of this acidic, high‑sulfur, ultrafine slurry, effectively resisting both intense acid attack and continuous erosive wear.
Under prolonged, high‑load, highly corrosive operating conditions, cast‑stone composite pipes maintain stable performance, fully demonstrating superior wear and corrosion resistance as well as structural integrity. Thanks to their outstanding adaptability to demanding service environments, these pipes have become the standard choice for conveying medium‑concentration acidic tailings in China, offering exceptional practicality and broad industry applicability.
