Application Case of Cast Stone Composite Pipes for Tailing Transportation at the Lixi Tailings Pond of Jinduicheng Molybdenum Industry

The joint tailings‑transportation project for the Baihualing and Sanshimudi mining areas of Jinduicheng Molybdenum Co., Ltd. employs cast‑stone composite pipes to lay the conveyance pipeline to the Lixi Tailings Pond, with a total installed length of 10,000 meters. Officially commissioned in March 1996, the system processes an average of 30,000 tons of raw ore per day. To date, it has operated continuously for more than three decades without a single abnormal failure, demonstrating the exceptional reliability of the pipe material. Thanks to its outstanding durability, the cast‑stone composite pipe is ideally suited to the mine’s long‑term, uninterrupted conveying operations.

The operating conditions for transporting this molybdenum‑ore tailings are extremely demanding: the true density of the tailings is 2.80 t/m³, the grind size—passing 0.074 mm—accounts for 64%, the median particle size (D50) is only 0.023 mm, the design weight concentration is 30.5%, and the slurry specific gravity is 1.25. The slurry is weakly acidic, with a pH of 6.4. Additionally, the slurry exhibits a yield stress of 5.0 Pa and a viscosity of 0.152 Pa·s, while the critical flow velocity in the pipeline is set at 1.50 m/s. Fine‑grained tailings are highly susceptible to erosive wear and mild media corrosion, imposing exceptionally stringent requirements on the pipeline’s wear‑ and corrosion‑resistance performance. Cast‑stone composite pipes are precisely tailored to meet these operating conditions involving weakly acidic, fine‑particle, high‑rheological‑resistance molybdenum‑ore tailings.

After more than thirty years of continuous, high‑standard conveying operations, the cast‑stone composite pipe has consistently maintained structural integrity and smooth operation, with no wear or leakage, no aging‑related failure, and no need for frequent inspection or maintenance. This pipe is ideally suited to the long‑distance transport of fine, weakly acidic molybdenum mine tailings, and its decades of reliable service underscore its exceptional practicality and adaptability to demanding operating conditions, making it a benchmark project in China’s molybdenum mining industry for ultra‑long‑term tailings conveyance.
